Welcome back everyone! GGB had a blast at Heritage Park’s National Night Out last Tuesday. The community came out and enjoyed music and food and each other’s company. Our kids from summer program got to show off their stilt-skills to start off the night. There was popcorn and sno-cones to beat the heat, GGB set up samples out there for people to try in case they haven’t. A HP Talent Show even kicked off that night, children and teens from the community showed off their secret talents. We had singers dancers and rappers come out and provide us with their talents. Face paint and henna was available for them to enjoy. I feel like NNO was a huge success and GGB would like to thank everybody for coming out and having a good time.
With the MN Cup coming up fast, GGB has been very busy this month. We've had multiple sales on the 8th at Annex Farmers Market, Herbivorous Butcher, and the Wedge Co-Op. We also have been preparing for the MN Cup by filming our 60 second video that tells you all about Green Garden Bakery. We will have a longer edition for Kickstarter ad in the near future. Our executive team is preparing for their educational/business trip to Miami this August. GGB is going to use their leadership skills to inspire youth at the Urban Strategies site in Miami to help them learn how to start their own youth-run enterprise. Some GGB executive members are working on special characters for our veggies, so be sure to watch for Lemmy Mon and his veggie friends! GGB is so excited to bring you guys new things and we're working hard every day to get further in making the world a healthier place. With the characters, MN Cup , sales , meetings and classes, baking, and handling finances... I'd say GGB is making it work! From the inside of GGB, I am proud to see how far these teens have gotten. Everyone on this team is a very important asset to everyone on this team! I'm proud to say "I'm apart of GGB." because I know they are going to do great things.
Everyone, Thank You, And Have A Wonderful Day
The New Guy,
Hi! I’m Lexi Lee-Johnson. I’m 19 years old and just came home to North Minneapolis after finishing my Freshman year at Jackson State University. I have worked with the youth who started Green Garden Bakery for the past six summers, since they were 9 and 10 years old. I look back on the first few summers that I've spent with these youth when they just started participating in healthy cooking and gardening classes. I am amazed and very honored to have watched these kids that grew a business from something that was completely foreign to them six years ago. I remember how much of a hassle it was to motivate these 9 and 10 year olds to work in the garden dirt on a hot summer day and now they their own garden that is 10x as big and they take so much pride in running themselves. Many of these kids were shy or bouncing off the walls and didn’t know how to talk to adults. Now they are confident business leaders that are able to talk to anyone. I can’t help but smile that youth from an urban environment started a business to build a healthier community. I started in Heritage Park as a Step-Up worker with the goal to be a mentor and motivate the kids to look beyond the gates of Heritage Park and North Minneapolis. Now I look at these young entrepreneurs and see that our roles have reversed and they are now teaching me to never underestimate someone based on their age and chase after your dreams as soon as you can! I’ll be helping out Green Garden Bakery at the Annex Farmer’s Markets on Saturdays all summer long so I hope you can come by and say hi!
Hello from GGB! This is Jacobi Simmons, the "new guy" or GGB's newest Youth Executive Team member and social media intern. I wanted to share a few updates on what we have all been up to at GGB this past month.
Early in March we started our garden planning (in winter coats) but we just couldn't wait any longer for spring! We also said goodbye to some fantastic volunteers from St. Kates Service Learning BSN-RN program. Two weeks ago we had a blast from the past with three past mentors visiting us from CA, MS, and WA over their spring break.
Our baking crew did a lot of experimenting this past month and came up with some great new recipes we might be adding soon - Jalapeno Chocolate Chip Cookies, Sweet Potato East African Donuts, and we are also experimenting with hard candy and chocolate infused with garden herbs.
Last week we were invited to give out samples at the MN Cup Launch Party. We met so many amazing entrepreneurs and left with a great new network. The same night our GGB Adult Advisory Board met for the first time. We are so grateful for all our new mentors!
This past Sunday we held a pop-up sale at the Wedge Co-op and we had a great success! Our next sale will be April 8th, 11-2pm at Herbivorous Butcher at 507 1st Ave NE Minneapolis, MN. We sold there on March 4th and SOLD OUT early! Please be sure to come and pay us a visit a week from Saturday.
This weekend our Youth Executive Team will be doing a Spring Break Leadership Retreat! Wewill conduct Team-building activities, create multiple GGB commercials, test their company knowledge with a game of Jeopardy, and plan some Random Act of Kindness Events around the community.
GGB also has an Amazon Wish-List if you're feeling generous and would love to help out the link to our wishlist is linked to the button below. If you have any of the items at home we would be happy to take slightly used donations as well.
Thanks everyone for all the love support and hope to serve you in the future!

5 Ways to Gift Green this Holiday Season... And Always
In honor of our "green" mission and the work that we have been doing recently crafting and finding fun ways to use recycled materials to decorate for the Holidays we are sharing with you 5 ideas for you to reuse this Holiday season!
1. Choose alternative ways to wrap your gifts. Re-use the brown paper bags from grocery stores, newspaper or even an old pringles can (great for gifting cookies)! Embellish with ribbon or a bow and it's a simple way to reuse but still wrap gifts in a decorative way.
2. Re-use your old holiday cards! One simple way is to cut them into gift tags. This is what we did with our boxes and we were happily surprised at how easy and cute they turned out to be! Another cute idea is making a wreath.
3. For those of you that don't like the idea of using a fresh Christmas tree, there's many alternatives to the traditional fake tree. Here are a few examples: one constructed of books, one from cereal boxes and the last from a ladder.
4. Upcycle by creating ornaments from materials such as a light bulbs, pop bottles, toilet paper rolls or bottle caps.
5. Create a holiday village out of recycled boxes!
We hope these ideas have inspired you to make your holiday season even greener! If you have any ideas for any green holiday projects or you've done something in the past that you'd like to share. Please comment below!
Otherwise, we look forward to seeing you during the Green Fair or at the Annex Indoor Holiday Market. If you can't make it out to any of these events don't forget that we are always happy to cater any holiday gatherings you might be hosting. Click on the "Menu+Purchase" button for more info.
Until next time,
